Decisions, Decisions

The last few months have been a major decision making time for me.  Even now I am making decisions that will effect my life and future for years to come.  As I have been on this journey I have come to learn more and more how I am a work in process and how decision making or becoming a better decision maker is a part of our spiritual growth.  So as someone who is still on the journey the following are a few things I’ve learned thus far about decision making that I am now trying to apply as I move forward…

1) The wise decision is usually obvious.  (The Bible says wisdom shouts from the rooftops.  Andy Stanley says the greatest question we can ask in decision making is, “what is the wise thing to do?”)

2) God is sovreign over all decsions.  (God has yet to be suprised by my choices.)

3) Decision making is a blessing and not a curse.  (Many times I have dreaded making a decision instead of realizing what an awesome opportunity and blessing it is to have a choice…in anything…so enjoy the process.)

4) We really are supposed to trust God. (This may sound silly but sometimes in spite of the thousands of bumper stickers and t-shirts that I think we take this for granted.)

5) If we are not sure of ourselves we won’t be sure of our decisions. (I’m not not talking about a humanistic faith in mankind instead of God…I’m simply saying you have to believe God has endowed you with the ability to make GOOD decisions.)

6) Seek godly counsel…but not in the place of seeking God. (That one hurts.)

7) Few decisions will be made with 100 % certainty.  (This too is from an Andy Stanley book.)

8) You never know when you are going to be called on to make a big decision so we must always be spiritually prepared.  (If we are inconsistent our decisions will be too, and they will lack confidence.)

9) Making no decision is the wrong decision to make.  (Never let decisions happen to you…make them.)

10) Decisions are a MAJOR part of our journey with God.  (Look at the people in the Bible and their walk with God…constantly they are defined by their decisions.  God chose David and David chose to battle Goliath.  Jesus constantly called the disciples to decide.  God’s greatest test for Abraham was a decision.  The fall was a decision.  The cross was a decision.  I could go on but I will spare you.)
